Delhi witnessed the coldest day in the last 70 years on Wednesday

In National Capital Delhi, the incessant rain brought down the temperature to the lowest maximum recorded at Safdarjung in May since 1951.

 

The city which experiences scorching temperatures in May witnessed the coldest day of May in the last 70 years on Wednesday when the maximum dipped to 23.8 degrees Celsius. It was 16 degrees below normal.

 

The national capital also recorded the highest ever rainfall in a single day in May on Wednesday.

 

The Met Department's Safdarjung Observatory logged 60 m.m. rainfall in 12 hours between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m.

 

The India Meteorological Department records showed that before this, the national



capital had received 60 m.m. of rain on May 24, 1976.

 

Najafgarh recorded 57 m.m. rainfall while SPS Mayur Vihar received 39.5 m.m. and Palam 36.8 m.m. of rainfall between 8.30 a.m. and 8.30 p.m. Delhi is expected to continue experiencing light rain or thundershowers till noon yesterday. The temperature will hover between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius.

 

Earlier on Wednesday, the IMD had issued an orange for the National Capital predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

 

It has said that the rains are result of interaction between the remnant of cyclonic storm Tauktae and a Western Disturbance.
