Visakhapatnam: Revenue minister Dharmana Prasada Rao launched the process of caste census in his home constituency of Srikakulam on Friday. Speaking on the occasion, he asked people to cooperate with officials, which would help them in getting benefits from the government.
The minister underlined that census will help implement social welfare schemes for poor in a better manner and allot budget where it is needed the most. The census will also help understand the social ladder, based on which schemes can be
implemented.
Prasada Rao for the next 10 days, volunteers and staff of Sachivalayams will undertake the census and pass on information to the state government through their district administration. Andhra Pradesh is the second state after Bihar to launch its caste-based census. The launch of the census has coincided with unveiling of the 125-foot-tall statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Vijayawada. Village and ward secretariat staff will visit 1.7 crore households using a mobile application to capture the caste details, the minister added.
