Guwahati: The diversity of our country is a strengthening force for our democracy, said Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla while addressing the Members of the Assam Legislative Assembly in Guwahati yesterday on the last day of the Winter Session.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Birla said that despite differences in language, culture and geography, it is our democratic system which is binding us for a stronger nation. He added that it is the power of the constitution and our decisions should be people centric and neutral.

The Lok Sabha Speaker said, healthy debate and discussion should be there before passing a bill in an Assembly. He also stressed on abiding the decorum of the House as it will strengthen the democratic value of our country and people's faith in the democratic system of governance.
 
Mr Birla said that all our activities should be for the welfare of the people and differences in the party line should not be a roadblock for the development of the state. He urged for giving more importance to Standing Committees of a Legislative Assembly for better working of a democratic system.

Earlier, the Lok Sabha Speaker launched the Assam Legislative Digital TV in the Central Hall of the Assam Legislative Assembly. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma , Speaker of



Assam Legislative Assembly, Biswajit Daimary; Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Ministers, MLAs and other dignitaries graced the occasion.  
Chief Minister Sarma welcomed Mr Birla to the Assam Legislative Assembly for being the first ever Lok Sabha Speaker to address the House.  

Later in the day, Mr  Birla presided over a private channel's award function in the city. This Winter Session of Assam Legislative Assembly was adjourned sine die today after passing 15 bills during the 5 daylong Session. 

The important Bills are ‘The Assam Cattle Preservation (Amendment) Bill, 2021; Assam Co-Operative Societies Amendment Bill 2021, The Assam Police (Amendment) Bill ,2021, The Assam Direct Recruitment Commission for Analogous Post in Class -III and Class-IV Bill, 2021, the Assam Motor Vehicles Taxation (Amendment) Bill, 2021,  The Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill 2021, the Deori Autonomous Council (Amendment) Bill, 2021, the Assam Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2021, the Assam Municipal (3rd) Amendment) Bill, 2021, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation  (Amendment) Bill, 2021, the GMDA (Amendment) Bill, 2021  and the Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva Viswavidyalaya (Amendment) Bill, 2021.
