The Election Commission has announced the schedule for election to six Rajya Sabha seats from Tamil Nadu. The polls will be held on the 18th July, for which the notification will be issued on First of next month.
Five members of the Upper House from the state superannuate on the 24th of next month. They include Dr Maitreyan, Dr Lakshmanan, Mr Rathinavel and Mr Arujunan, all four from the AIADMK and Mr D.Raja from the CPI. The sixth seat vacated after the DMK member M Kanimozhi was elected to the Lok Sabha from Tuticorin.
Candidates
can file their nomination from the 1st to the 8th of July, which will be scrutinized on a ninth day. Withdrawal of candidature would be allowed until the 11th of July. The election will be held on 18th July from 9 am till 4 pm. Counting of votes will begin at 5 pm and the results are announced in the next few hours.
In the state Assembly, the AIADMK has 123 seats and the DMK 100. Its ally Congress has seven members and the IUML one. TTV Dinakaran, who has floated his own party the AMMK after his ouster from the ruling AIADMK, is the lone independent in the House.
