The Election Commission yesterday highlighted that it considers political parties as priority stakeholders, with the voters being the prime stakeholders, and it deeply values views, suggestions, and questions coming from them. In a social media post, the Commission said that it will respond in writing with a full factual and procedural matrix uniformly adopted across the country.
The poll body’s comments came in the wake of questions raised by the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on electoral data in Maharashtra. Mr. Gandhi, while talking to media in New Delhi, said that around 32 lakh
voters were added to the electoral rolls of Maharashtra between the state assembly polls in 2019 and the Lok Sabha elections last year.
He alleged that, however, 39 lakh new voters were added in the state in a period of five months, between the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the 2024 Maharashtra assembly polls. Mr. Gandhi also questioned why more voters were added in five months after the Lok Sabha election than were added in five years prior. He accused that despite multiple requests, the Election Commission has not responded to these allegations.
