The national party status of Trinamool Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Communist Party of India (CPI), was revoked by the Election Commission of India, while the Aam Aadmi Party was recognised as a national party.

In a statement, the Election Commission said that it has been reviewing the status of recognized national and state political parties as per provisions under Para 6A, 6B and 6C of the Symbols Order 1968. The review of status of political parties is conducted by the Election Commission of India after every Lok Sabha polls and State Legislative Assembly elections.

Here’s what the Election Commission order said:

. The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been recognized as a national party on the basis of it electoral performance in Delhi, Goa, Punjab and



Gujarat.

. The national party status of NCP, CPI and TMC has been revoked.

. NCP and TMC have been recognized as state parties in Nagaland and Meghalaya respectively based on their performance in the recently concluded Assembly Elections 2023 in the states.

. Recognised state political party status was granted to Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in Nagaland, Voice of the People Party in Meghalaya, and Tipra Motha in Tripura.

. The status of state parties were withdrawn from PDA (Manipur), PMK (Puducherry), RLD (Uttar Pradesh), BRS (Andhra Pradesh), RSP (West Bengal) and MPC (Mizoram). They will remain as Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPP).

As of now, the BJP, Congress, CPI(M), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), National People's Party (NPP) and the AAP have national party status.
