Normal life is likely to be affected in Bengaluru on Tuesday as an umbrella union of farmers called for a bandh in protest against the release of Cauvery water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The police have imposed Section 144 of the CrPC citywide, prohibiting gathering of more than five people.
This is the first of the two bands called this week in Karnataka over the water release. Tuesday’s 12-hour bandh under the aegis of Karnataka Jala Samrakshana Samiti, an umbrella outfit of farmers' unions, will begin at 6 am, and a protest rally will also be held in the
state capital.
“Tomorrow we have called for a bandh from 6 am to 6 pm. We will start a procession from the Town Hall to Freedom Park. And we will submit a memorandum to the government of India,” Kurbur Shanthakumar, a farmer union leader, said.
He added that if there is “no proper response” to their protest from the government, they “will decide on a further course of action."
Shanthakumar said that several educational institutions, market vendors, and transporters have extended their support for the protest.
