Filing of nominations for assembly elections in Meghalaya and Nagaland will end today. Scrutiny of nominations will take place tomorrow. The two states will go to polls on the 27th of this month to elect their new Assemblies. 

In Meghalaya, 153 nominations were filed yesterday. The Chief Electoral Officer said that a total of 294 candidates have filed their nomination papers so far. Several heavyweight candidates are expected to file their nomination papers on the last day today. The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held tomorrow. 

In Nagaland, candidates started filing their nominations yesterday. 22 candidates from different political parties and Independents submitted their papers for 17 seats.

Out of 22 nominations filed, seven are from the Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF), six from the BJP, eight from the Nagaland Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and one from the



JD(U). 

The most prominent among them is the three-time former Chief Minister and sitting Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio, who is the NDPP's Chief Ministerial candidate from the Northern Angami-II seat. The BJP has entered into a pre-poll alliance with the NDPP.

NPF sources said Chief Minister T.R Zeliang will file his nomination today. Almost all the political parties have come out with the list of candidates for the polls.The Naga Peoples’ Front (NPF), which is going to contest in all 60 assembly constituencies, released the names of 58 candidates. 

While, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) released the final list of 38 candidates, as per seat sharing pre-poll alliance with the BJP. 

These are the two major parties having the highest number of candidates to be contesting the forthcoming Assembly February 27 polls.
