A major fire broke out at Butcher Island which is situated close to the Elephanta Island on the Thane creek, near Mumbai. According to officials, the fire broke out at around 5:30 in the evening at two fuel storage tanks. Fire-fighting operations were going-on till the last reports came in.
No casualties have been reported so far.
Butcher Island has an oil terminal used by the port authorities to offload it from oil tankers. The crude oil is stored in oil containers on the island.Meanwhile,Manohar Rao, executive director and head of safety, BPCL, said that prima facie the cause of the fire was lightning, though further probe will be carried out tomorrow.
