MUMBAI: In a freak mishap, a Monorail caught fire at the Mysore Colony in Mumbai in the wee hours of Thursday. However, there were no casualties.
While the cause of the fire, in which two coaches were charred is not yet known, the Maharashtra Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has launched a probe into the incident.
Mumbai has a single monorail line which runs along a nine-km route, covering seven stations, from Chembur
to Wadala. The trains run from 5 AM to midnight every day.
According to MMRDA's joint project director Dilip Kawathkar, one coach of the empty monorail train caught fire around 5 am at Mysore Colony station before the revenue services were started. "A total of two coaches were affected by the fire. This train was travelling from Wadala to begin day's service from Chembur," he said. The operations had to be suspended because of the fire.
