Retired Supreme Court judge V. Ramasubramanian has been appointed as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) yesterday. President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice Ramasubramanian. Priyank Kanoongo and Dr Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (Retd.) have also been appointed as members of the commission.

Justice Ramasubramanian was appointed



Judge of the Supreme Court on 23rd September 2019 and retired on 29th June 2023.

This appointment comes months after former Supreme Court Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra concluded his tenure as NHRC chairperson on 1st June this year. After Mishra’s retirement, Vijaya Bharathi Sayani became the acting chairperson of the human rights panel.
