Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has denied any rift between the Centre and the BJP-ruled states over the issue of hiked penalties for traffic rule violations. Addressing a media event in Mumbai yesterday he said state governments can levy fines in the range between the minimum and maximum limits prescribed in the
act.
He clarified that the purpose behind higher penalties under the amended Motor Vehicles Act is to save lives and not for revenue generation. He revealed that Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal have extended support to the move.
