The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and other political outfits in Darjeeling hills have decided to carry on with the indefinite shutdown.
GJM leaders announced to carry on with the indefinite bandh in the hills after a six-hour-long meeting of the political outfits in Kalimpong. The GJM leaders said that they will decide the next course of action on July 6.
The hills remained tense, however, few reports of odd skirmishes were reported from different parts of the Hill district. In one incident three constables received injures and small damage to some parties. The police and the security forces are patrolling the streets and
keeping a close vigil on the entry and exit routes. Internet services remained suspended in the hills. Except medicine outlets, all shops, schools and colleges were closed, and transport was off the road.
On the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at a public meeting in Purba Burdwan ruled out any bifurcation of West Bengal. She said that Bengal cannot be divided. Meanwhile, the West Bengal State Commission for Protection of Child Rights issued a show cause notice to the GJM for using children in their protest rallies, which is violation of child rights.
