New Delhi: The government has directed all major social media platforms, including Meta, Instagram, Google, and X, to remove specific content or applications that enable users to commit offences under the Telecommunications Act, 2023. The move comes in response to reports of social media influencers providing instructions on altering Calling Line Identification (CLI), a practice known as CLI spoofing,

which allows callers to display a different number to the recipient.

Authorities consider this an act of telecommunication tampering and a violation of the law. Officials stated that stringent action would be taken against platforms that fail to comply, as the government aims to curb misuse and safeguard digital communications integrity.
