With the Election Commission of India (ECI) announcing the dates for the Haryana Assembly elections, speculation is mounting over whether either of the major contenders — the Congress and the BJP — will secure a clear mandate this time around.
Haryana will go to poll in a single phase on October 1 and results for the same will be announced on October 4.
In the 90-member Haryana Assembly, a party needs 46 seats to form the government. The 2019 elections saw no party achieving this majority. The ruling BJP secured 40 seats, while the Congress trailed with 31. The newly formed
Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) won 10 seats, playing a crucial role in helping the BJP form the government.
Meanwhile, the Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) managed to win just one seat each, with seven independents also emerging victorious.
The recent Lok Sabha elections, which saw the Congress increase its vote share from 28.42 per cent in 2019 to 43.67 per cent in 2024, have added uncertainty to the upcoming assembly race. Despite the vote share increase, Congress won only five out of ten seats, signaling a neck-and-neck fight for the upcoming state elections.
