Heavy rain lashes parts of Tamil Nadu

Mon 06 Nov 2017, 11:37:37
Heavy rain lashed parts of Nagappattinam, Tiruvarur and Tirunelveli districts in Tamil Nadu in the last 24 hours. Thousands of acres of paddy fields in Nagappattinam and Tiruvarur districts are reeling under columns of water for the past many days, causing concern among farmers. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy inspected areas like Kolathur, Kodungaiyur and Keelkattalai yesterday in Chennai and said the city has experienced 56.6 centimeter rain in the last five days.

It accounts for 72% of the total rainfall the city normally gets during the whole season. State Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar said in Chennai, seven people have lost their lives due to rain related incidents including wall collapse and electrocution.

In Kanchipuram district, nine of the total 13 taluks have been declared vulnerable to flooding.

Under the influence of the trough of low pressure in the South West Bay and adjoining Central East Bay, coupled with the upper air circulation in the Gulf of Mannar, parts of Nagappatinam, Tiruvarur, Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, Ariyalur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Tirunelveli and Villupuram experienced several spells of rain. The MET Department has forecast, due to the present weather systems, the quantum of rain will come down from now on.

Fishermen have been asked to exercise caution while venturing into the sea. The PWD officials say, the major reservoirs that meet Chennai’s water requirements have only 3.74 TMC water as against the total capacity of 12.5 tmc water. Chennai district administration has said schools will be functioning today, after continuous leave since last Tuesday.
