Heavy rain lashes Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

Heavy rain is pounding most of the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry since last evening.Low lying areas remain engulfed in water due to continuous downpour.Vehicular movement on many arterial roads have been affected in Chennai. 

Chennai Corporation has set up a helpline number 1913 and readied about 450 high powered motor pumps to evacuate water from affected areas.Fishermen in Chennai, Ennore and many other places kept themselves off the rough sea. 

In Thanjavur, farmers have begun cultivation in thousands of acres with the hope that the North East Monsoon will sustain irrigation.The rain has cheered the farmers in Tamil Nadu as they brighten the hope for at least a single crop this year. 

Right from the onset of the monsoon last Friday, many



parts began receiving rain and it has now covered almost the whole state. 

The MET Department has said in its 24-hour forecast, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in ten coastal and adjoining districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry and some places in interior areas as well. 

The upper atmospheric circulation in South Western Bay off the coast of Srilanka remains stationery, triggering the rain. 

In Chennai, holiday has been declared for schools and colleges. In neighbouring Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Nagappattinam and Karaikkal, today is a holiday only for schools. 

In Cuddalore, schools in all the Taluks except two will remain closed. Reservoirs in the state are getting copious inflow.
