Resuming the hearing on the batch of petitions challenging the Karnataka High Court’s judgment, which upheld the right of educational institutions to ban the wearing of hijab in government schools and colleges in the State, the Supreme Court on Monday listed the matter for September 7 at 2 pm.

The Supreme Court had earlier in the day taken up the matter and later adjourned it till 2 pm.`

On March 15, a full bench of the Karnataka High Court had dismissed a batch of

petitions filed by Muslim girls studying in pre-university colleges in Udupi seeking the right to wear hijab in classrooms.

The high court had stated that wearing the hijab is not an essential religious practice in Islam and that the Freedom of Religion under Article 25 of the Constitution is subject to reasonable restriction.

The students had moved the court after the Karnataka government issued an order prohibiting Muslim female students from donning hijabs on campus.
