A Hindu-Muslim teen couple in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district committed suicide on Tuesday morning, allegedly because they didn't want their families to face any repercussions or harassment on account of their relationship.
According to a report in the Times of India Feroz Ahmed and Gunjha Sharma of Badagaon village, who were 19 and 18 years old respectively, ended their lives with pistol shots near the Bantara railway station on Tuesday morning.
The couple were reportedly under immense pressure because Ahmed was a Muslim and Sharma a Hindu.
According to eyewitnesses, the teenagers first hugged each other, and then
Ahmed shot Sharma in the head. Then he turned the pistol on himself.
"It happened before we could even believe what was going on. The couple was standing near the railway station, and then they hugged, and then we heard the gunshots," eyewitness Mohan Singh told TOI.
Police officials, who were alerted about the incident, said that the parents of the victims were not willing to claim the bodies of their children after the postmortem.
"Feroz called his parents and told them that he was going to kill himself because he didn't want them to face trouble," the report quoted Ahmed's relative as saying.
