An IAS officer drowned early Tuesday morning when he jumped into a swimming pool of a training institute in South Delhi to save his woman colleague who fell into it, police said.
Ashish Dahiya (30), who hails from Haryana's Sonepat, was rushed to Fortis Hospital where he was declared brought dead. His family suspect foul play has sought investigation, saying that he was a good swimmer.
Dahiya was attending a poolside party at the Foreign Service Institute in Berserai, near Jawaharlal Nehru University, when the incident took place around 1 AM. Police suspect he along with others had consumed alcohol.
Dahiya and around 30 trainee civil servants had gathered
there to celebrate their last day of their training. At one point of time, some of them decided to go for a swim in the pool.
A woman officer then accidentally fell into the pool and officers, including Dahiya, jumped into the pool. The woman officer was pulled out safely.
According to eye-witnesses, the other officers soon realised that Dahiya has not come out of the pool. He was then seen unconscious and floating.
A medical officer was called but attempts at reviving him with CPR before he was taken to hospital did not help. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead. Police said prima facie, it appeared to be a case of death due to drowning.
