With the monsoon gaining momentum in Kerala, the IMD has issued a yellow alert in eight districts in the northern and central regions of the state today.

Intermittent heavy rains continued to batter the districts of Kasargod, Kannur, Kozhikode, and Malappuram since yesterday. The district authorities have declared a holiday for schools today in  Kasargod, and all educational institutions in Kannur. 

Examinations at Kannur University, slated for today have been postponed. In Malappuram district, with sea remaining rough, water entered several homes in the coastal areas of Ponnani, and many



coconut trees were uprooted.

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has warned coastal residents and fishermen to remain alert in view of the possibility of waves rising up to 4.2 meters along the Kerala coast till 11.30 pm tomorrow. It said public should avoid visiting beaches or entering the sea during this period.

The Met Department said squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 Kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off the Kerala coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea.
