Uttar Pradesh: Polling in the last and final phase of Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh is underway. The counting of votes will take place on March 10. Voting will be held across 54 assembly seats in 9 districts, around 2.06 crores voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the polling to be held in Chandauli, Ghazipur, Mau, Azamgarh, Mirzapur, Bhadohi, Jaunpur, Sonbhadra and Varanasi districts. A total of 613 candidates are in the
fray.
In 2017 assembly elections, the BJP had won 29 of the 54 seats and its allies won another five seats while Samajwadi Party won just 11 seats. In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP and its allies could establish a lead in just 22 assembly segments. Whereas, SP and its ally (the Bahujan Samaj Party then) established a lead in 32 assembly segments in 2019.
The Congress, data shows, has been a marginal player in the region.
