New Delhi: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) which currently being presided over by India, yesterday adopted the first-ever presidential statement on maritime security soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a virtual open debate focused on global cooperation for maritime security.
In the statement, India as the UNSC President this month noted the threats to maritime safety and security and called upon the members to consider implementing the 2000 UN Convention against Transnational
Organized Crime. The UNSC reaffirmed that international law as reflected in the UN Convention on Law of Sea UNCLOS sets out the legal framework applicable to activities in the oceans including countering ilicit activities at sea.
In a tweet, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar said, the statement on Martime Security has been unanimously adopted by the UNSC. He thanked all Council members for supporting the first signature event of Indian Presidency.
