External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar has strongly condemned the terror attack by Hamas on October 7 last year in Israel. While virtually addressing the 55th Session of the UN Human Rights Council, the External Affairs Minister said the humanitarian crisis arising from conflicts required a sustainable solution that gives immediate relief to those most affected.

He further said that terrorism and hostage-taking are not acceptable and hoped that the conflict would not spread within or beyond the region. Dr. Jaishankar also said that the International Humanitarian Law must always be

respected. He added that the efforts must also focus on seeking a two-state solution where Palestinian people can live with Israelis.

Furthermore, Dr. Jaishankar highlighted India's approach to human rights by saying that it is rooted in democratic principles and the pluralistic Constitution guarantee of India. He said that the protection of civil and political rights and progressive realisation of economic, social, and cultural rights are institutional strengths of an independent judiciary, robust media, and vibrant civil society.
