India on Monday asked the United Kingdom to hand over 57 people, including industrialist Vijay Mallya and AgustaWestland case accused Christian Michel, who are wanted here in a number of cases.
The request was put forward to the UK during the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Theresa May here. On its part, official sources said, the British side sought the handing of 17 fugitives wanted by it under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) or against whom Letter Rogatory were
issued.
Among the people India seeks extradition include Michel, who is claimed to be the middleman in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland helicopter deal, Vijay Mallya, who is wanted in a case of loan default to the tune of over Rs 9,400 crore, and former cricket administrator Lalit Modi in cases related to irregularities in the Indian Premier League.
In a joint statement issued after a meeting between Modi and May, both the countries said that fugitives and criminals should not be allowed to escape the law.
