India on Wednesday sent a notice to Pakistan for the modification of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) after the northwestern neighbour “unilaterally” tried to change the process of resolving disputes between the two sides.
According to highly placed sources, the notice was sent after the “contravention of the graded mechanism of dispute settlement envisaged by Article IX of the IWT.” In a stern response to this unilateral decision by Pakistan, India sent a notice to review and modify the treaty itself, which could be a huge blow
for the lower riparian state of Pakistan.
Responding to India’s decision, Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said, “As we speak, a Court of Arbitration is holding its first hearing in The Hague on Pakistan’s objections to Kishanganga and Ratle Hydroelectric Projects."
She added, “The Court of Arbitration has been set up under the relevant provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty. Such media reports should not divert attention from the important proceedings of the Court of Arbitration.”
