India successfully test-fired the supersonic cruise missile BrahMos from the Indian Air Force's Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter jet for the first time today.
The test-flight will significantly increase the IAF's air combat operations capability, the defence ministry said.
The missile, which weighs 2.5 tonnes and is the heaviest
weapon to be deployed on India's Su-30 aircraft, hit a sea-based target in the Bay of Bengal from the fighter jet.
"The successful maiden test firing of Brahmos Air Launched Cruise Missile (ALCM) from Su-30MKI will significantly bolster the IAF's air combat operations capability from stand-off ranges," the defence ministry said.
