Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw has informed that Indian Railways has suffered a loss of over 259 crore rupees due to damage and destruction of its assets during agitations against the Agnipath scheme. In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Mr Vaishnaw yesterday said that a separate data regarding the amount of refund granted to passengers due to disruption of rail services on account of public disorder consequent to agitation is not maintained.
He, however, said that during the period from 14th to 30th June, a total refund of around 103 crore rupees was granted on account of cancellation of trains. He added that
Police and Public Order are State subjects and therefore, State Governments are responsible for prevention, detection, registration, and investigation of crime and maintenance of law and order on Railways through their law enforcement agencies.
Mr. Vaishnaw also informed that Railway Protection Force supplements the efforts of Government Railway Police and District Police to provide better protection and security to railway property and passengers. He said, cases of damage, and destruction of government property including railway property are registered and investigated by the concerned GRP and State Police.
