Janmashtami is being celebrated in different parts of the country today. It marks the birth of Lord Krishna.On the occasion, devotees throng the temples to offer prayers to Lord Krishna. Janmashtami was celebrated in many parts of Uttar Pradesh including Mathura yesterday.
In Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna, the temples are tastefully decorated. Celebrations in Mathura will continue for several days.
Another common form of celebration followed usually in Gujarat and Maharashtra is the practice of Dahi Handi. All Govinda troops set ready for Dahi Handi celebrations today in Mumbai. The chief attraction of which is `Govinda troupes' competing to form human pyramids and break pitchers strung high above the ground for hefty cash prizes, attract large crowds.

and Prime Minister have greeted the people on the occasion of Janmashatami. In his message, Mr Ram Nath Kovind said, the ideals of Lord Krishna’s life are of universal relevance. The President asked the people to commit themselves to follow the path of virtue shown by Lord Krishna and strengthen the society and nation by contributing to the well-being of the people.
Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu in his message said, the eternal message of performing the duties with sincerity without attachment to the results bestowed by Lord Krishna in the 'Bhagwad Gita' has been a source of inspiration for entire humanity. He asked the citizens to resolve to perform their duties and seek the path of righteousness.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet greeted the people on the occasion of Janmashtami.
