Key National Democratic Alliance (NDA) ally Janata Dal (United) on July 30 staged a walkout in the Rajya Sabha, protesting against the Triple Talaq Bill. The other NDA ally, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), has also indicated that it will strongly oppose the bill and walk out.
The JD(U) has six members in the Rajya Sabha. Speaking in the House, party floor leader and Bihar State president Bhasisht Narain Singh said Triple Talaq was a
social ill and needed a far greater social movement to tackle the problem. He refrained from offering any other reasons for the opposition.
The AIADMK, which has 11 members, has moved a resolution seeking to send the Bill to a Select Committee. “We will be strongly opposing the Bill; we are against the criminality clause,” a top AIADMK leader said.
Four hours have been allotted for the debate on the legislation, which started at 12.00 p.m.
