President Doupadi Murmu appointed Justice D Y Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said on Monday.
He is set to take oath on October 9, the same day that incumbent CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit demits office. Justice UU Lalit will retire after attaining the age of 65. Justice
Chandrachud would have a tenure of two years as the CJI and is due to retire on November 10, 2024.
"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon'ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22," Rijiju tweeted.
