Surendra Das, an IPS officer, died in a private hospital in Kanpur on Sunday after fighting for his life for five days. The police say he consumed poison.
A 2014 batch IPS officer, Das was a native of Balia district and was posted as SP (East) in Kanpur. According to the police, Das consumed poison at his government house early in the morning on September 5, and was rushed to a hospital by his family members. The next day, he was shifted to the Regency Hospital.
According to doctors, Das died of multiple organ
failure.
A suicide note was recovered from Das's home after the suicide bid. In it, he wrote that he took the extreme step, fed up with the daily family dispute, and that no one should be responsible for his decision.
"He had multiple organ failure and on Sunday at around 12:20 pm, when his heart also stopped functioning, we declared him dead," Rajesh Agarwal, the hospital's Chief Medical Superintendent, told media persons.
Das was posted in Kanpur for the past couple of months. His wife was living with him.
