Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa is to prove his majority on the floor of the State Assembly today. State Governor Vajubhai Vala has convened the day-long session at 11 AM today.
The session will begin with the swearing-in of the newly elected MLAs by the Pro-tem Speaker KG Boppaiah. The Pro-tem Speaker will also preside over the House proceedings during the trust vote to be held at 4 PM.
The Supreme Court yesterday ordered a floor test in the Assembly at 4 PM today, reducing the 15-day window given by the Governor to BJP Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to prove majority. A three-judge bench headed by Justice AK Sikri passed the order after hearing a Congress- JD(S) combine petition against the decision of Governor Vajubhai Vala to invite BS Yeddyurappa of BJP to form the government.
Ahead of the crucial floor test today,
former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was elected unanimously as the Congress legislature party leader in Hyderabad yesterday. The Congress legislature party meeting was held at a hotel in the Deccan city where its newly-elected lawmakers were staying.
In another related development, the Apex Court will hear the fresh plea of Congress and JD(S) challenging the appointment of KG Bopaiah as pro-tem Speaker at 10:30 this morning, much ahead of the trust vote. Chief Justice Dipak Misra decided to list the matter before the three-judge bench, headed by Justice A K Sikri.
In its plea, Congress-JD(S) combine has demanded setting aside of the decision to appoint BJP MLA Bopaiah as the pro-tem Speaker. The petition said it was contrary to the tradition, as per which the post goes to the senior-most legislator.
