The Karnataka State Government has cancelled the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan, who ruled Mysore in the 18th century. In an order, Kannada and Culture department has stated that Hazrat Tipu Sultan Jayanti being celebrated since 2016 in the state is cancelled with immediate effect. 

Kodagu BJP MLA K G Boppaiah had requested the Chief Minister to cancel the celebration saying that people of Kodagu have been protesting against it since



long.

Welcoming the Government decision, BJP MLA C T Ravi said that Congress' decision to celebrate Tipu Jayanti was appeasement of minorities. He alleged that the sultan was instrumental in anti-Hindu actions. 

Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during whose time the celebrations had started has criticised the Government decision. In his reaction he said, Tipu fought the British and contributed to the development of Mysore.
