The Karnataka High Court has directed the state Election Commission to declare the dates of election to 198 wards of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike within six weeks.
A Bench of Chief Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka and Justice Vishwajith Shetty also upheld the validity of the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Third Amendment Act that intends to increase the number of wards to 243.
But the court has observed that the Amendment
will not be applicable for the elections to be held in 198 wards. The court was hearing the PILs filed by the State Election Commission and two former Corporators seeking directions to the state Government to conduct the municipal elections in Bengaluru on time.
The term of BBMP council came to an end in September this year and the Government has appointed a senior IAS officer as its Administrator.
