Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw yesterday informed the Lok Sabha that Kavach has been deployed on 1465 route km and 144 locomotives on the South Central Railway so far. In a written reply, Mr Vaishnaw said Kavach is an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection system.
He said it aids the loco pilot in trains running within specified speed limits by
automatic application of brakes in case the loco pilot fails to do so. It also helps the train to run safely during inclement weather. The Minister said the cost of Kavach is approximately 50 lakh rupees per kilometre. The funds utilized on Kavach works so far are around Rs 1,217 crore. The allocation of funds during the year 2024-25 is Rs 1112.57
