Communist Party of India (CPI) Kerala State Secretary Kanam Rajendran passed away at a private hospital in Kochi on Friday. He was undergoing medical treatment.
The 73-year-old leader had requested a leave from the position of party secretary a few days ago due to health issues. Kanam was the state secretary of CPI since 2015.
Kanam Rajendran had a long and influential political career. He contested and won from the Vazhur constituency in Kottayam district in 1982 and 1987. He also held significant positions, such as the State Secretary of the All India
Students' Federation (AISF) and the State Secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC).
Born on November 10, 1950, in the village of Kanam in Kottayam district, Kanam Rajendran entered politics in the 1970s when he was a student. In 1971, he joined CPI Kerala state council at the age of 21.
During his tenure as the State General Secretary of AISF, he played a key role in strengthening the organisation's influence nationwide. Under his leadership, the AITUC expanded its presence into various sectors, including cinema, IT, and new-generation banks.
