The Kerala government on Thursday removed Governor Arif Mohammad Khan as the chancellor of Kerala Kalamandalam deemed-to-be-university through an amendment.
The state government has amended the rules and regulations of Kerala Kalamandalam deemed-to-be-university in accordance with the University Grants Commission (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations of 2019.
As per the new amendment, the chancellor will be an eminent person in the field of art and culture appointed by the sponsoring body.
As per rules, the Kerala government is the sponsoring body of Kerala Kalamandalam deemed-to-be-university.
The rule
regarding the tenure of the Chancellor was also amended. "The Chancellor shall hold office for a term of five years from the date of assuming office and shall be eligible for reappointment for one more term, provided no person shall be eligible to hold the office on attaining the age of 75 years," the amended clause reads.
Of late, Governor Arif Mohammad Khan and the LDF government in Kerala have been engaged in a tussle over the functioning of state-run universities. including appointment of vice-chancellors.
On Wednesday, the Kerala government announced bringing an ordinance replacing the Governor as the chancellor of universities and appoint eminent academicians to the post.
