Thrissur: Coming under tremendous pressure from different quarters including CPM and social media activists, the Al-Irshad Senior Secondary English School, Killimangalam, Cheruthuruthy here has revoked its decision to sack an upper primary English teacher for marrying a man outside her religion. The husband of Saranya K. V., DYFI leader Muhammed Haris, had come out in the open against the school authorities for firing his wife after they registered their marriage, solemnised at the Vaniyamkulam local committee office of CPM near Ottapalam on Saturday.
“After the wedding, my wife had spoken to the principal of the school Najma Rasheed on Sunday seeking one-week leave. But she was told that as she had tied the knot with a person from a different religion, she needn’t come to work and her certificates presently with the school will be sent to her through courier,” Mr Haris told DC. But as the news went viral on social
media, several people and the local party leaders spoke to the school management on Monday and got their decision revoked.
The school officials later informed Mr Haris and the local CPM leaders in Vaniyamkulam about it. Ms Rasheed said the news about sacking the teacher was false and after she had discussed the matter with the management on Monday, she was granted one-week leave and she could report for work on Monday. Mr Haris said his relationship with Ms Saranya began more than six years ago and both of them would remain firmly with their respective faith.
“After having children, they will be given freedom to choose any faith they wish to follow,” he added. As both of them were from conservative families, he said, their parents were strongly against the wedding. The couple is presently staying at the ancestral house of the wife of former CPM MP S. Ajayakumar in Vaniyamkulam panchayat.
