Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju arrived in Lakhimpur this morning to take stock of the flood situation in Assam.
Several senior officials from the Centre are accompanying him. Mr. Rijiju along with Assam Water Resources Minister Keshab Mohanta and Sports minister Naba Doley will visit flood hit areas in Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts today and will also hold review meeting with district administration.
Meanwhile, Morigaon district administration has evacuated people from some low lying villages as a precautionay measures as the surging water of the Brahmaputra is likely to breach embankment at Lahorighat.Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal yesterday visited the Kaziranga national park and met forest guards. He instructed Forest department to take step for the safety of
the animals. Mr. Sonowal said Union Health minister JP Nadda assured all health related help during flood.
Over 17 lakh people in 24 districts have been affected in current wave of flood. Brahmaputra is continuously flowing over the danger level at five places. 2700 people have been evacuated today at 7 districts by NDRF, SDRF and police. Additional rescue teams are being sent to affected areas.
Two NDRF teams have been deployed at Majuli and two SDRF teams sent to Lahorighat at Morigaon district. As of now, 8 thousand people have been evacuated safely.
District administrations are distributing essential food items including rice, dal, salt, mustard oil, and baby food. 31 thousand 5 people have taken shelter at relief camps.
