The Indian Army has decided to rename its Eastern Command headquarters Fort William in Kolkata as 'Vijay Durg' as part of the Modi government's decolonisation efforts.
The historic fortress, built by the
British in 1781, has been renamed Vijay Durg, paying homage to the oldest fort on Maharashtra's Sindhudurg coast. The decision was made in mid-December 2024, with internal military communications already adopting the new name.
