The Ministry of Labour and Employment has urged platform workers to register themselves on the e-Shram portal for formal recognition and access to the benefits of the Ayushman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). The AB-PMJAY health scheme provides coverage of 5 lakh rupees per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization across more than 31,000 public and private empanelled hospitals in the country.
Recognizing the contributions of gig and platform workers to the nation’s economy, the Union Budget 2025-26 includes provisions for the registration of online
platform workers on the e-Shram portal, issuance of identity cards, and healthcare coverage. The Ministry highlighted that the gig and platform economy is expanding, creating new job opportunities in sectors such as ridesharing, delivery, logistics, and professional services.
According to NITI Aayog, India’s gig economy is projected to employ over one crore workers in 2024-25, with the workforce expected to grow to 2.35 crore by 2029-30. To ensure the early implementation of these budget provisions, the Ministry will soon launch the scheme.
