New Delhi: The Election commission may not roll out the seeding of voter identity card with Aadhaar in the upcoming assembly polls of the five states.
Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra on Thursday said that Cabinet has approved the Bill, the law has not been enacted yet. Chandra said this in Chandigarh while speaking with media persons on the issue supponding assembly polls. Top officials of EC are on two days visit in Punjab to assess the preparations for the upcoming assembly polls.
The CEC said that linking voter card to Aadhaar will help in deleting duplicate votes and maintaining purity of voters. “This will ensure that there is only one person who is associated with one card,” he said.
He explained that there can be some voters who may be registered at two places in the electoral rolls.
Earlier, in
order to ensure preparation of error free electoral roll and to prevent duplication of entries, a proposal to amend Representation of the People Act, 1951 to enable deduplication of electoral data using Aadhar system was proposed by the Election Commission.
The cabinet on Wednesday gave green signal to the reforms which will allow seeding the Aadhaar number with electoral rolls on a voluntary basis. Besides, the Cabinet also cleared the EC’s proposal to ease the enrolment schedule for first-time voters.
Under the new proposal, sources said, enrolment of first-time voters will be allowed four times a year.
Election Commission is likely to announce the schedule of assembly elections in five states including Goa, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Manipur in next couple of weeks.
