The Lok Sabha will resume the special discussion today on the glorious journey of 75 years of the Constitution of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to respond to the debate in the Lower House today.
Yesterday, the Lok Sabha began a two-day debate on the Constitution to mark the beginning of the 75th year of its adoption in the country.
Initiating the discussion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that the Indian Constitution paved the way for nation-building by addressing all aspects of social, economic, political, and cultural life.
The Minister noted that 75 years ago, the Constituent Assembly completed the process of creating a Constitution for the newly independent India. He emphasized that the Constitution created by the Constituent Assembly was not just an official document but an expression of the will of the people.
In a veiled attack on Congress, Mr. Singh said that, in recent years, attempts have been made to portray the Constitution as the contribution of a particular party. He clarified that the Constitution is not the contribution of any single party but an unparalleled, transformative document aligned with the values of India.
The Minister observed that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is working with the spirit of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas. He added that the government is working in accordance with the Dharma outlined in the Constitution of India.
Mr. Singh also affirmed that the Indian Constitution is progressive, inclusive, and transformative. He highlighted that in this country, a person born in a poor family can become either the Prime Minister or the President.
The Minister further pointed out that the contributions of several leaders in the making of the Constitution have been deliberately overlooked. He mentioned that the thoughts of leaders such as Madan Mohan Malviya, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh, and Veer Savarkar had strengthened the Constitution.
Participating in the
discussion, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of Congress stated that the Constitution is the protective armor that keeps citizens safe.
She added that it is the armor for justice, unity, and the right to express. Ms. Vadra accused the ruling side of making attempts to dismantle this protective armor.
Taking part in the debate, Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party said that the Constitution is the soul of democracy. He noted that the House is once again discussing the Constitution after 75 years.
Mr. Yadav stated that the Constitution is the true protector of the downtrodden and oppressed in the country. He claimed that several communities are suffering due to a lack of representation and reservation.
T.R. Baalu of the DMK stated that the Constitution is not merely a book of laws, rights, and duties but a vision of the first-generation leaders of independent India that continues to guide the nation.
Janata Dal United MP and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan) said that those who tamper with the Constitution will be shown their place. Mr. Singh criticized Congress for imposing the Emergency and for misusing Article 356 to topple state governments.
Kalyan Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress, TDP MP Dr. Byreddy Shabari, Arvind Sawant of Shiv Sena (UBT), Jagdambika Pal and Bhartruhari Mhatab of BJP, Dr. Amol Ramsing Kolhe of NCP (SP), Shambhavi of LJP (R), K. Subbarayan of CPI, TMC MP Mahua Moitra, Mallesh Babu of JDS, and other members also participated in the discussion.
Earlier, during the discussion, the Lower House faced two brief adjournments following an uproar over remarks made by TMC MP Mahua Moitra in connection with the death of CBI Judge B.H. Loya.
The discussion remained inconclusive, and the House was later adjourned for the day.
The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to take up the special discussion on the Constitution on Monday and Tuesday. Prime Minister Modi is expected to respond to the debate on Tuesday in the Upper House.
