The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning predicting that a cyclonic circulation will transform into a depression in the Southeast Bay of Bengal by today and then likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm. In a statement, the weather agency said that the cyclonic circulation over the southeast Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood now lies over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining the South Andaman Sea and extends upto middle tropospheric level.
It has been predicted that there may be moderate rainfall at most places during these days, with scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Andaman & Nicobar
Islands.
Due to the IMD warning, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal are on the high alert. Local disaster response teams ready to respond in case of any emergency. The weather office has warned fishermen of squally weather in southeast Bay of Bengal with windspeed reaching 40-50 kmph from today onwards.
The agency has also issued advisories to fishermen to stay away from the sea until May 11, with more rain forecast for Chennai and surrounding areas. It has also suggested that regulation of tourism and offshore activities and shipping near Andaman and Nicobar Islands between 8 and 12 May.
