High alert has been issued for Visakhapatnam and its surrounding districts as a deep depression is likely to hit north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The well marked low pressure system will turn into a depression on Wednesday and intensify into a deep depression by Thursday. Under its impact, the port city and north coastal Andhra are set to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Dec 8. Squally winds are expected to blow at a speed of 40-50 kmph along the
coast.
Rainfall is likely to begin on Dec 7 and continue till Dec 9, Y K Reddy, director of India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad said. “A few days back, the system was set to hit districts in south coastal Andhra Pradesh like Krishna and Nellore. Now, it is likely to hit north coastal Andhra Pradesh and only touch south coastal Andhra Pradesh. There are very little chances of it becoming a cyclone, but it will reach the deep-depression stage,” Reddy told.
