In the by-poll to Chinchwad near the Pune district of Maharashtra, BJP candidate Ashwini Jagtap won the seat with a lead of over 36,000 votes. She defeated her nearest rival Nana Kate of NCP while Independent candidate Rahul Kalate trailed far behind.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar has won the Kasba Assembly seat in Pune city which was the BJP bastion. The counting of votes in Pune's two assembly by-polls - Kasba Peth and Chinchwad - started at 8 am



yesterday morning.

The Kasba Peth and Chinchwad assembly went to polls on February 26 with an average turnout recorded of around 50 per cent.

This was the first election after the formation of the Shinde-led Shiv Sena and BJP government in the State in place of the Uddhav Thackeray government. The by-polls were triggered by the death of Kasba Peths BJP MLA Mukta Tilak and Chinchwad MLA Laxman Jagtap.
