West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a phone call to Trinamool Congress leader Jawhar Sircar, who quit as the party's Rajya Sabha MP, and urged him to reconsider his move, sources said.
Earlier in the day, Sircar resigned as Trinamool Congress's Rajya Sabha MP and decided to quit politics over Mamata Banerjee's
government handling of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. He also cited corruption among a few party members as the reason for his decision to quit.
Sircar will go to Delhi on September 11 and hand over his resignation letter to the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, sources said.
