A 23-year-old man died after self-immolation at the doorstep of his girlfriend's house in Uttar Pradesh's Maharajganj on Saturday evening, police said.
The deceased, Kishan Arya, was a resident of Basantpur village in Arya Chowk area. He used to work at a clothes store in the city.
The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) said Kishan and his girlfriend used to live together. Around 11 days ago, the two had a fight and the woman came back to her family's home in the city's Farenda Road area.
According to the ASP, Kishan's family members alleged that the woman's family set him on fire. Meanwhile, the woman's family claimed that Kishan himself brought petrol to their house, sprinkled it on his body and set himself on fire with a

lighter.
The woman's father also got injured in the incident while trying to save Kishan. The father was admitted to the district hospital, police said. However, Kishan, who set himself ablaze and tried to get inside the house, died on the spot.
After the incident, the woman refused to identify the body and claimed she didn't know the man.
Two years ago, Kishan ran away with his girlfriend when she was only a minor. Her father filed a complaint with the police and Kishan was arrested. When Kishan got out of the jail after serving his time, he ran away with the woman again.
Kishan was very active on social media. He uploaded a lot of photos of him and the woman, many of which showed her wearing vermilion (sindoor in her maang).
