The Maharashtra government on Tuesday accepted the first report of a committee headed by retired High Court Judge Sandeep Shinde, constituted to decide the procedure for granting Kunbi caste certificates to the Marathas in the Marathwada region.
The state cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, also decided that the OBC Commission will collect fresh empirical data to assess educational and social backwardness of the Maratha community.
As per the Sandeep Shinde committee report, about fifty-two crore records have been checked in all the eight districts of Marathwada and 13 thousand 498 old Kunbi records have been found. The work of verifying Kunbi records is going on daily and the Cabinet today also approved to start the process of issuing
Kunbi caste certificates.
While examining these records, documents in Modi and Urdu languages were found. The cabinet has also approved to translate and preserve these documents and digitize them in the public domain and issue Kunbi caste certificates based on them.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Shinde spoke to Maratha Reservation activist Manoj Jarange Patil over the phone and assured him of taking a concrete decision on giving Kunbi certificates to the Maratha community.
Meanwhile, curfew has been imposed in Maharashtra’s Dharashiv district following outbreaks of violence over the issue. This comes a day after authorities imposed a curfew in Beed district of Maharashtra.
